"Are you sure you want to trade him in?"

The slave, clothed only in regular slaves' garb, instead of the rich fineries he was used to, stared ahead resolutely, determined not to cry, while the slave trader and the other man negotiated.

"You said yourself he was a good man, good lover, good father.. I mean, you're sure?"

The other man waved a hand dismissively. "Yes, I'm sure."

The trader nodded somewhat sadly and motioned to the guards. "Take him away," he said.

The slave barely had time to throw the other man one last, pleading look before he disappeared into the gray building beyond.

The man raised an impersonal eyebrow at the trader. "Can you show me what else you have?"

Two slaves, an older man and a younger man, both crude by nature, stood next to each other on one wall of the room.

"What's wrong with `im, you reckon?" asked the younger, nodding toward the lone figure in the corner.

The older glanced at the dirty, matted creature, his long hair in knots and his once-white tunic covered in dirt and dust.

"He made the ultimate mistake, that one."

The younger man tore his gaze away from the sobbing man to give his companion a quizzical look.

The slave sighed, shaking his head. "He fell in love with his master."
