              One

One touch--no more--and I was lost to you.
One touch was all it took--although, in truth,
I was already yours before that night;
my adoration then was hardly new;
my worship sprang not from my foolish youth,
but blossomed from your wisdom, strength. Your light
compelled my heart take wing, but not by force;
and when I touched you, found you did not burn,
but sent into my spirit warmth against
external and internal dark. What source
could have bestowed on me such great return
for what I had to give? Perhaps you sensed
some hidden worth in me, for you could have
had any other for your own, and yet
chose one young man, uncertain in his own
eyes. Sweet that night, that first night, sure to save
my soul! The bright remembrance has been set:
a jewel in my mind. Lamp-glow that shone
upon your hair ne'er shone on silk more fine;
I watched you watching me, and in that slow
soft evening, was made whole: your passion was
my hunger met, your kisses were my wine;
your murmurs wove my life-song--And thus, though
we could not stop Time, still we gave it pause.
So many things, my Master, I recall...
and some things that I never will forget,
the sights of which I never will be free--
No power can deny I saw you fall,
nor purge that blinding instant of regret:
one touch--no more--then you were lost to me.
