As Master Qui-gon Jinn enter his quarters, he immediately felt the presence of his new padawan, Obi-Lynn. He went into the common room, the lights still were on and on the table were a pot of tea and his cup. On the couch asleep was his new padawan. Qui-gon walked over to the table and picked up the tea pot and discovered it was still warm. So, he poured himself a cup and sat down to watch his padawan sleep, and went over the event of the day that lead to him accepting a new padawan.

Qui-gon was drinking his tea and thinking about his morning meditation. During his meditation, the force once again had shown him two paths. On one path he stood alone and on the other path was a young inmate but, this time the paths had come together. Before the paths had always been separate. Now the force was showing him that it was time for them to come together. The force was telling him once again that it was time to move on -- time to put the past were it belonged, in the past. And it was time to accept things as they are and to let the past go. What happened before could not be undone.

It was time to take another padawan.

His second padawan was killed just before his knighting. It seemed as if it were only yesterday instead of three years ago. They had just finished their final mission together and were heading home for Coruscant. There awaited the news of his padawan's knighting. It was to be a surprise for him. His padawan had worked long and hard for this moment and he was very proud of his young padawan. He was looking forward to cutting the braid and welcoming him to the rank of Jedi Knights. But it never happened, all because of a stray shot.

They were waiting for their ship when it happened. They felt a disturbance in the Force but before they could even react, a battle began to rage around them. The planetary law enforcers were trying to apprehend some criminals. The criminals started shooting at the officers, who returned fire. Both seemed heedless of the innocents around them. The two Jedi joined the battle and at its conclusion the criminals that weren't dead or severely injured were arrested and carted off to jail. In the pandemonium that always follows intense violence, Qui-gon realized that his padawan was not at his side. Focusing on the Force that swirled inside him, stirred by adrenaline, Qui-gon localized his padawan's location and headed for a blaster-riddled building that seemed ready to collapse any moment. As he entered the building, he saw his padawan laying in a crumpled heap, too injured to move, too injured to speak. Behind him lay two small children, who he had shielded from the onslaught of blaster shots only several moments earlier.

Qui-gon went straight to his padawan's side He discovered that his padawan was hit by a stray baster shot, and at the same time he realized his padawan was dying.

Qui-gon was devastated. He tried to send healing energy to him, but he knew his padawan would not survive, and so did his padawan. Xani desperately wanted to say something to his master. And he had to say it soon, before he no longer had the strength to even breathe.

With tears in his eyes, his padawan began, "I'm sorry I didn't make it to knighthood, Master. I really wanted to have you cut my braid and tell the other Jedi that I was a knight now. I wanted to make you proud of me like a father would be of his son, because," he coughed, grimacing at the pain from the motion, "because that is what I have always considered you to be, a father, a friend and my master, all rolled into one."

"I'm honored, my padawan," Qui-gon said softly, still focusing the healing energy of the Force to stop the inevitable, "that you consider me as your father, for I have always considered you as my son. But you are a Knight. I spoke with Master Yoda last night during my quick report. The Council made its decision early yesterday morning." Qui-gon gave a pitiful laugh that sounded choked. "It was." He closed his eyes in pain. "It was supposed to be a surprise for you when we got home."

"Thank you Master, for telling me. I guess I will miss my knighting ceremony." His padawan rested his head wearily on his master lap and Qui-gon could feel the Force slowly draining away.

The resigned tone in his padawan's voice made Qui-gon want to laugh in hysteria, deny what was coming in the next painful moment, but he couldn't laugh and didn't. How could he with his padawan dying in his arms? Knowing that his padawan was becoming one with the force, Master Qui-gon Jinn decided that he would perform the ritual now. As his padawan was a Knight according to the traditions of the Jedi, he could perform the Knighting Ceremony himself; the Council's public ceremony was just a formal way of announcing a knighting to everyone at the Temple.

Qui-gon pulled his padawan to as much of an upright position as he could and began the mental preparations as fast he could, knowing it was a race against time. He took his lightsabre from his belt and turned the blade to its lowest setting. He began the ceremony, using the words from his own ceremony many years ago.

"Xanatos, this day is for you. You have completed your training and now it is time for you to join the ranks of the Jedi Knights. With the cutting of your braid, you will start on a new path, protecting the Republic and maintaining peace for all within and without its borders." Then he cut the black braid trailing down the right side of his padawan's neck. With a jerky motion, he pulled the tie from his own hair, allowing the long brown lengths to fall forward, curtaining the two for the final private moment between them. He used the tie to tie off the newly cut end of the braid and gently placed the soft black silkiness into Xanatos' limp hand.

Xani accepted it, fingers curling weakly around what was his pride, his tie to a man he considered to be a great Jedi. Then after a few seconds that seemed like an eternity, he shuffled it back into Qui-gon hand, saying as he did so, "I give this braid to you to remind you of what we once had as Master and Padawan. I will always think of you as my master even though you are no longer my master. You are and always will be my master, friend and father and I thank you for all you have taught me and will continue to teach me."

"Council and Knights, Padawans and Initiates, let me introduced to you, Knight Xanatos, a new knight of our Order," Qui-gon intoned solemnly.

And at these words Xanatos passed into the Force, his final breath whispering away. Qui-gon held him close, saying a final good-bye, tears coursing down his whiskered cheeks. With heavy steps and heart, Qui-gon rose, carrying the body of his lost son.

He carried the body through the broken streets, he carried the body onto the transport, and he carried Xanatos one final time into the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Another final good-bye was said in the bright firelight of a funeral pyre, solemn and surrounded by friends who were the only family a Jedi would ever know.

On a shelf next to a holopic, the black braid lay always where Qui-gon could see it and remember the son he had lost.

He would had made a fine Knight and Master if he had lived.

And now the force is showing him is time to move on -- to take another padawan and start him on his road to his knighthood. Can he do it? Will he lose another padawan before his knighting? These are questions he would have to deal with and trust the force to give him the strength and wisdom to deal with his uncertainties.

Qui-gon got up, walked over to the shelf where laid a holopic of his last padawan and his braid. He gave the braid a loving touch, I would never forget you my son, you will always be a part of my life but, it is time to move on, and do the will of the force. He felt a touch and turned around and saw no one there. But, he suddenly felt at peace with his decision. He picked up his robe and left his quarters to start his day.

After attending some meetings Qui-gon finally had some time to himself. He decided that he would attend some of the lightsabre classes.

He entered the observation room just after Obi-Lynn and Bruck started their match. He silently found a seat next to his former master. He leaned over to whisper his greeting to Master Yoda and Master Windu who was sitting on the otherside of his master. Then he turned his attention to the match in process.

Obi-Lynn was finding it hard to do anything but defend herself from Bruck. Once again she lost her center because of Bruck's teasing remarks. A slash to the left, then to the right and a backward flip put some distance between them. The distance gave her time she needed to recenter herself in the force before Bruck resumed his teasing and the match.

"Come on, want to call it quit, little girl?" Bruck said, "You know I'm going to win."

"Not today, Bruck."

"Why not, little sister." Bruck replied, trying to break her focus by calling little sister. Swinging his sabre left, then right pressing his advantage.

"Because I plan on winning this match today. Making it two in a row."

"We never did that before."

"There is always the first time."

And the match continued.

In the review room, Qui-gon was watching the match with some interest.

He lean over and whisper, "Who the inmates fighting?"

"Obi and Bruck. Bruck is the taller one," Mace whispered back.

"Height matters not where Force is concerned. Quiet now! Watch now!" Master Yoda said.

"Yes, Master." Mace and Qui-gon answer together.

As Qui-gon watch the match, he was making mental notes of the little one weakness and its strengths. He was thinking of routines and exercises that would strengthen the weakness and improve on the little one's strengths.

Then all at once Master Jinn was in the middle of what he was doing and he knew through the force that the little one was to be his be his padawan.

With that realization, he continued to watch and take mental notes for future reference.

In the center of the room, Obi-Lynn was getting tired. The match had lasted longer then usual. She knew she had to make a move soon or Bruck would win this match. She centered herself in the force once again. Then she began gathering the force to her, then she leaped in the air, flipped and twisted over Bruck, and landed behind him with her training-sabre at Bruck's neck.

The instructor called the match, and the inmates deactivated their training-sabres and bowed to the instructor.

"Well done, little ones. We will talk later about the match, to see if you know what you did that was right and what you did wrong and how you can work on the mistakes you made and improve on the things you did right, okay."

"Yes, Master," Obi-Lynn and Bruck answered.

Then the instructor dismissed them. They turned and left the floor heading for the locker rooms.

"You got lucky, little sister. That was a great move you made."

"Thank you, my brother. Maybe next time you will win."

"Count on it Obi. Next time I'll be looking for that move."

They got to the area where they had to separate to enter the locker rooms. Obi-Lynn turned to Bruck and said, "See you at noonmeal."

"You bet. Until then." Then they entered the locker room to change into clean outfits.

In the viewing room, Qui-gon felt the little one gathering the force. As he watch the little one, he knew the inmate was about to make a move. Then it happened. The little one leaped in the air, flipped and twisted over the other inmate and landed behind him with the training-sabre at his throat.

That was the end of the match. The instructor called the match, and gave some final instructions to the inmates; then he sent them to the locker rooms. That was the last of the match in this class. They all got up and left the reviewing room for noonmeal.

Qui-gon sat down at the master table between his master and his friend Mace. As he greeted them, his eyes were on the inmates' table. He was watching the little ones and was wandering if they were talking about the match with their yearmates at the table. Mace was saying something to him that he missed.

"I'm sorry, Mace what was you saying."

"I said, that was a good match between them wasn't it."

"Yes, it was. Obi seems to like gymnastics."

"Yes, her instructors said she enjoys the flying part of the routines."

"She, Obi is a girl?" Qui-gon asks in surprise.

" Yes, didn't you know? Her name is Obi-Lynn Kenobi, adopted daughter of Senator Kenobi." Mace answered.

"No, I thought since you call her Obi, she was a boy."

"No difference it makes, what sex Obi is," replied Master Yoda. "Force is strong in her. Make a great Jedi Knight one day she will."

After that, Qui-gon settled into eating his meal and coming to another decision. He had to meditate some more on his choice. It's not that he doesn't believe Obi-Lynn would one day be a great Jedi as Master Yoda predicted; it was his abilities to get her there that he doubted.

After noonmeal, Master Jinn found himself in the meditation garden. He got into his favorite meditating position to begin his meditation. His surroundings were peaceful, and he use his surrounding to go into a deep meditation state. There once again the force showed him the two paths but, now the paths were together. He no longer stood alone. Beside him was the inmate in the sabre class, Obi-Lynn, and in front of him was his deceased padawan Xani.

"Hello, Master," he said.

"Hello, Xani. I miss you, my son. Why are you here?

"And I miss you, father. To tell you Master that it is time to take another padawan. And the child next to you is the one the Force had chosen for you."

"But Xani, Obi is a girl and I'm not sure if I could train her."

"We know you can train her, Master. We know of your doubts but, we, the force, will help you when needed. And so will the other members of the Jedi family. You would be the perfect master for her. I know you can do this father."

Qui-gon look back at the inmate and knew he would accept her as his padawan. He turn back to Xani and said, "I would never forget you my son. You will always hold a special place in my heart. But, you and the force are right, it is time to move on, and accept Obi-Lynn as my padawan."

"I will always be here whenever you need me, until we are together again." Then Xani was gone and only he and Obi-Lynn were left.

As Qui-gon came out of his meditation, he sensed someone watching him. So he opened his eyes and look up, and before him stood his soon to be padawan. She was very pretty and as she grew up she would be very beautiful. She had red-brown hair down to her shoulder, and changeable green-eyes, and from her built he figure she would no taller then 5' 2" to 5' 3" in height. But, that didn't matter because as his master predicted she would be a great Jedi one day, and he was already looking forward to cutting her braid when she becomes a Jedi knight.

Then she asks, "Did you call me master?"

It was then that Qui-gon realize the force had brought her to him.

"No, little one, the force brought you to me. It wants us to be Master and padawan and so do I. Will you accept me as your master?"

"Yes, master. But, I do not know you name. My is Obi-Lynn Kenobi."

"And my is Master Qui-gon Jinn, my padawan. Let's go and announce our intentions to the council."

After he got Obi-Lynn settled in her new quarters, his doubts came back. He decided to go visit his former padawan and talk to her about them. He turn to Obi-Lynn and said, " Padawan, I'm going to see Knight Stauche, for a little while. Will you be all right here by yourself?"

"Yes, master."

"Then I want you to begin your studies for tomorrow's classes. And when you are finished you may watch some vids. But, I want you to be in bed by 9 o'clock, okay."

"Yes, master."

"Oh, yes and there is some juice in the box, if you want something to drink."

"Yes, master. Thank you. master."

After he was sure Obi-Lynn was settle into studying for tomorrow's classes. He went to see his former padawan.

Before Qui-gon could knock on the door, his padawan open the door and said, "Come in Master."

His talk with his padawan took longer then he thought. But, his doubts were finally settled again and he was at peace with himself. He left his former padawan just after 9, heading back to his and his new padawan's quarters, ready to face what the future holds for him and his padawan.

As he came back to the present moment, he discovered that his cup was empty. He got up, picked up the tea pot and went to the kitchen to put the dish away. Then he came back to the common room, where his padawan was asleep. He walked over to the couch and put his padawan into a deep sleep. Then he picked her up and carried her to her bed. He use the force to put the cover back and lay her in her bed. He brought the cover up to her chin and pull her braid out of her face. He bend down and kiss her on the forehead, and went to the door. Before he left the room he looked at her one more time and knew that whatever happened in the future, they would be able to handle it. He turned and left the room, closing the door.

He went to get ready for bed, knowing tomorrow will be here soon.
